KY Gemstone Shoppe is family-owned and operated right here in Lancaster, KY. Since our company opened in 2006, we’ve treated every customer like they were a part of our family. Other companies may offer similar services, but our services are the best, and come with a personal touch.
As a child living in Lincoln Co, KY we had geodes lying around in every field. The farmers hated them and if you were big enough you had to gather them up and toss them into a ditch so they wouldn’t damage your plow. My brother Leonard told me those rocks had diamonds in them but I never knew what a diamond was except that those rocks had little sparkly things inside them.
I thought you were rich if you could fill your pocket with those sparkly crystals inside a geode rock. When I was in the 6th grade I saw a movie and the actor split a diamond rock so he could facet it into a gemstone. I thought, “That is what my brother was talking about!” and I was sure that I would never be able to learn how you make diamonds in that movie. I only had to wait another 40 years to figure that part out………..
In 1998 I started reading books on faceting gemstones and the internet opened many doors for me to learn. After about 2 years I found a Faceter willing to train me and I worked in his shop learning to cut gemstones. He told me to keep cutting since I had finished more stones than he thought was possible during my time of training. Over the next few years I trained at Conner Jewelry Institute in Indiana learning how to finish jewelry from casted metals. Later I trained with Robert Wooding in Atlanta learning his technique for setting gemstones. Then I was able to lean other techniques from Danny and Libby Barnes at the Alternative Jewelry Shoppe in Nicholasville, KY.
Eventually I created a pendant for Tubby Smith’s wife Donna when he coached the Kentucky Wildcats. It was a special design with a frosted “K” in the center made using a special color Blue Quartz. Donna could not believe someone could do this by hand. At different times, I have cut other frosted intials into gemstones but try to focus on "K".
Every gemstone I create is custom cut in my shop after I research how to optimize the angles and number of facets. This is why they sparkle so much. Whether my gemstones are set in silver or gold, the settings are substantial to wear for a long time. The gemstones speak for themselves and are the result of over 50 years of imagination and passion to re-create those stones I found in Lincoln Co., KY as a child. And far better than I had dreamed that I could watching that movie in the 1950s.
